St. Martin: 5 Irresistible Reasons Why I Keep Coming Back

I want to take you on a journey to one of my favorite places on Earth – the charming little dual-nation island of SXM. Saint Martin and Sint Maarten, the French and Dutch sides, collectively offer a unique blend of culture, cuisine, and nightlife that keeps drawing me back. Why, you might ask.?

1. Good Vibes and Better People: SXM is rightfully nicknamed "the friendly island," and its locals are the living embodiment of this moniker. The sense of community is palpable, with islanders excited to share their hidden gems. Whether hitchhiking to lesser-known beaches or being invited to a local's favorite bar, the genuine warmth of the people here creates an unforgettable connection. In my four visits, I've not only explored the landscapes but also forged lasting friendships with locals who embody the spirit of hospitality.

2. Rich in Culture: The unique duality of Saint Martin (French side) and Sint Maarten (Dutch side) creates a rich tapestry of cultures. European flavor mingles with Caribbean vibes against a stunning backdrop. While English is widely spoken, the island resonates with Dutch, French, and even French Creole. With over 80 nationalities on this 37-square-mile gem, the cultural diversity is evident in every aspect of life. While the island appears to mostly hosts wealthy Eruopeans, many Americans vacation here as well. So much so that the U.S. dollar is one of the three accepted currenties the island, in addition to the Antillean Guilder (aka Florin) and Euro. The blend of European/Caribbean culture with American comfort makes SXM an alluring paradise.

3. Different Flavors of Food: To be candid, my first two experiences with the food here weren 't great. However, Beyond the initial beachside eateries, SXM's culinary world is a hidden treasure waiting to be explored.The French side, in particular, is renowned for its gastronomic delights. From Dutch pastries in the morning to a Caribbean-infused lunch and a French dinner, the island offers a feast for the senses. It feels like a luxury to have the option to indulge in the variety of french, duch, and caribbean cuise at any point in the day. The diversity extends beyond the main cuisines, with additional options to explore Indian, Chineese, Moroccan, food and more. SXM not only satisfies the palate but also serves aesthetic perfection. There are countless resurants and bars that are eye-catching and transport you to the south of France, the Mediterranean, and even Bali. Whether your focus is on feeding your stomach, or your eyes, there's something for everyone here.

4. Sun, Sand & Salt Water: SXM boasts turquoise waters and pristine white sand beaches that invite you to float away your worries. With 37 beaches to choose from, each more enchanting than the last, the island offers a haven for beach lovers of every preference. Whether you're drawn to the thrill of body surfing 3-foot waves, prefer the tranquility of waiting in shallow waters, or simply love lounging along the shore, SXM's diverse beaches cater to all desires. Snorkeling enthusiasts are in for a treat as the island's underwater realm reveals a vibrant world—encounters with turtles, graceful stingrays, and schools of fish await beneath the surface. Adding a unique touch to the ocean floor, SXM proudly hosts an underwater museum. During one of my snorkeling excursions, I even swam past a sunken helicopter. SXM's beaches aren't just sandy stretches—they are gateways to a world where nature, adventure, and relaxation converge in harmony.

For those seeking a change of scenery, Lotterie Farm stands as an oasis, offering not only freshwater pools and jacuzzies for leisurely lounging but also hiking trails and exhilarating zip-lining experiences for the adventurous at heart. Amidst the lush surroundings, a restaurant and bar add a touch of culinary delight to this nature-infused sanctuary.

5. Vibrant Nightlife: As the sun sets, SXM transforms into a lively hub of activity. While the Dutch side is renowned for its nightlife, the entire island buzzes with energy. From beach bars hosting day and night parties to a schedule of vibrant music events, including Hip Hop, Afrobeats, Reggae, and Electronic beats, the nightlife scene is diverse and thriving. Local bands add a touch of authenticity, and you can catch them on various nights of the week at popular spots like Red Piano, Soggy Dollar, Lotus, Nowhere Special, and more.
