The burning question on every adventurer's mind: Is Mexico safe to travel to as a solo traveler in 2023? As a solo female traveler, I understand the concerns and questions that arise when contemplating a trip to Mexico City (CDMX). We've all heard the stories about crime rates and safety issues, but let me assure you, CDMX is a destination worth exploring. In this post, we'll debunk common myths, provide relevant statistics, and share personal experiences to shed light on the safety of solo travel in CDMX.

The Reality Check: Addressing Crime Rates and Safety Concerns

It's time to tackle the elephant in the room: Mexico's crime rate. While it's true that Mexico has faced security challenges, it's important to remember that the situation is not uniform across the entire country. CDMX, specifically, has seen improvements in safety measures, making it a viable option for solo travelers.

According to Mexico Daily News, recent statistics reveal that CDMX has experienced a decline in crime rates. While the government admits that they still have a lot of work ahead of them to reduce these rates ruther, this is an encouraging trend that highlights the city's commitment to enhancing safety for both locals and visitors.

Personal Perspective: My Solo Adventure in CDMX

Let me share my personal experience with you. During my trip to CDMX, I chose to stay in the Escandon neighborhood, just outside the vibrant Hipodromo district. My friend, Arielle, graciously hosted me in her apartment (find out more about our apartment swap here), which had a doorman and a gated entrance. This gave me an added sense of security.

Staying in Escandon provided me with plenty of opportunities to walk around the city. My long walks took me through several neighborhoods, such as Condese, Polanco, Roma, and Centro Historico. All of which felt safe, vibrant, and friendly. On any given day you can find locals, tourists, and expats hanging out at the park, riding their bike in the street, or chatting up the local street vendors.

Safety First: Tips for Solo Women Travelers in CDMX

To ensure a safe and worry-free journey, here are some essential safety tips for solo women travelers:

  • Send excursion details to friends and family, including the name of the tour company and your itinerary.

  • Research the emergency number for Mexico (remember, it's not always 911) and familiarize yourself with the location of the nearest police office and hospital.

  • Brush up on your Spanish to enhance your communication skills.

  • Avoid walking alone in unfamiliar places past a certain time and set a personal curfew.

  • Trust your instincts, stay vigilant, and be aware of your surroundings.

Embracing the Welcoming Spirit of CDMX

One thing that struck me during my time in CDMX was the friendliness of the locals. The people I encountered were warm, welcoming, and always ready to offer assistance. Engaging with them and embracing their vibrant culture added an extra layer of joy to my solo adventure.Though Spanish is the primary language spoken, I found it easy to communicate with people despite my Spanish being a little rusty. I even managed to snag a date while I was there! Dating while traveling solo traveling is a whole other blog post - more on that later.
