Dubrovnik's Old Town is more than just a picturesque backdrop (and filming location for Game of Thrones - yes, I'm a fan); it's a treasure trove of flavors waiting to be discovered. As we ventured through its winding streets and charming alleyways, we uncovered hidden culinary gems that offered a taste of authentic Croatia. This is not your typical tourist's guide. Instead, it's a collection of our favorite food and wine experiences, off the beaten path and far from the cruise ship crowds.
Breakfast
Minar Bakery: A Morning Indulgence
Our mornings in Dubrovnik began with a delicious local favorite – Burek. These pastry pockets, stuffed with savory meat or creamy cheese, made for the perfect on-the-go breakfast. We'd find them at the local bakeries, with Minar and Holy Burek being our top choices.
Best Eats
Restaurant Marco Polo (Michelin Star): True Culinary Masterpiece
A Michelin-starred gem hidden within Old Town's walls, Restaurant Marco Polo is a culinary treasure. We couldn't resist starting with a Dirty Martini, and after some coaching, it became one of the best we'd ever tasted. The pièce de résistance was the Istrian fuži – homemade pasta in a creamy sauce, adorned with shrimps and exquisite Istrian black truffle. Our culinary journey also included Oysters on Ice, Dalmatian Prosciutto Bruschetta with fig jam, and the heavenly Baked Caprillo.
Taj Mahal Old Town: A Taste of Bolivia in Croatia
An unexpected delight was Taj Mahal Old Town, a Bolivian restaurant that won our hearts. We usually steer clear of veal, but here, the veal meatballs were succulent and brimming with flavor. However, the real star was the butter – rich, creamy, and generously served. Be sure to make a reservation; this place fills up quickly.
Barba: The Octopus Salad Haven
Barba, renowned for its octopus burger, caught our attention. Though the burger was on our list, we opted for the octopus salad. It was a decision we didn't regret. This salad, perhaps the best we had during our stay, is a must-try. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait – it's worth it.
MOSKAR Street Food: Our First Taste of Croatia
Our Dubrovnik culinary journey began with our first meal at MOSKAR Street Food. We dove into two quintessentially Croatian dishes – the black rosoitto, made with squid ink, and Macaroni Dubrovnik style, handmade macaroni pasta with a beef sauce based on red wine. We couldn't resist the Mussels either.
Heritage of Dubrovnik: A Croatian Culinary Treat
Conveniently located across the alley from MOSKAR Street Food, Heritage of Dubrovnik offered us delightful dishes, including anchovies and a scrumptious Octopus salad.
Peppinos: A Sweet Surprise
Address: Ul. od Puča 9, 20000, Dubrovnik, Croatia & Ul. Svetog Dominika 1, 20000, Dubrovnik, Croatia
Peppinos may appear touristy, but it holds a secret – the best gelato we've ever tasted. With flavors like Carob & Fig Nostalgia and Kinder Maxi King, the gelato's creamy perfection won us over (multiple nights in a row).
Bars in Dubrovnik's Old Town
Buža Bar: More Than a Bar
While the drinks may not be the star here, the views and the opportunity to watch people cliff jump make it a must-visit. Plus, the chill atmosphere is a nice reprieve from the bustling main street. Just remember, there are no bathrooms – only the open ocean.
Caffe Bar 'The Knop': Unsuspecting Gem
A short walk from the old town gates, Caffe Bar 'The Knop' offered us a delightful surprise. Liverpool football-themed, it boasts outdoor seating with a mesmerizing view. As someone not typically inclined toward pubs, I chose to sit outside. The drink matched the view perfectly. A view you mind find familiar if you've seen Game of Thrones.
Enoteca Wine Shop: For Wine Enthusiasts
Though not a bar, Enoteca Wine Shop is the ideal place to pick up a bottle of wine to enjoy later. It's the perfect way to end a night in Dubrovnik, even if it means a hike back to your Airbnb.
D'vino Wine Bar: Sip and Relax
D'vino Wine Bar offers a great selection of wines in a serene setting. It's the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a quiet evening.
Bakus Wine Bar: A Cave of Wine Delights
Bakus Wine Bar offered us a unique experience – drinking wine in a cave. The earthy ambiance was as inviting as the knowledgeable staff who shared insights about the wines.
Honorable Mentions
Bard Mala Buza - Known for its atmosphere, it's worth a visit.
Beach bar Ddo - Offers a great vibe and a stunning beachside setting.
Cafe On the Wall (Sv. Petar) - Arguably the best place to watch the sunset.
Gradska Kavana Arsenal Restaurant - Skip the food and relax over a cup or coffee or champaign while you take in the dazzling views of the port.

This is more than a guide; it's a reflection of my culinary journey through Dubrovnik's Old Town. From the mouthwatering Burek pastries to the spectacular views at Buža Bar, each experience added a unique flavor to our adventure. So, follow our footsteps, savor every bite, and make your own delicious memories in Dubrovnik's Old Town
